A  cool breeze in late October of 1956. Walking through the door hit with the sound of Elvis who could make people dance even from thousands of miles away. A lovely African American couple welcomed home their sweet baby girl.

Little did they know, that baby girl would be the first African American woman on the moon. Originally born in Decatur, Alabama,  when Mae was three, the Jamieson family moved to Chicago. There her uncle introduced her to archaeology, evolution, and astronomy. Inspired by African American actress Nichelle Nicoles who played as a lieutenant in star trek, set Jemison up to do what was unthinkable. At just 16 she graduated from Morgan Park High School, then she graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor in science, right after that she graduated from Cornell medical school. After attending school Jemison served as a medical officer until she was off to her next adventure, the NASA Space program.

Out of 2,000 applications, there were only 15 spots to be filled, lucky Mae Jemison was able to take one of these lucky spots. This was in the late 80s when nothing was easy, making her accomplishments so much more than just something little. While in the space program Jemison faced racial and gender discretion at every corner. But those who once spoke down on her looked up in 1992 to see Mae Jemison, the first black woman in space. Aboard the Endeavor with 6 others Mae made the 127 orbits journey around the earth. Taking just 6 days! Since then Jemison has paved the way for four more brave African American women ready to take on the challenge. After being an astronaut for just 6 years Jemison went on to her next adventures.
