Space exploration has been arguably the most fascinating modern discovery, fostered by prominent engineers. Back in the 20th century, when the Soviets and the United States were in a Cold War, both nations were determined to demonstrate their technological prowess, thus naming it as a “Space Race.” Unfortunately, it’s often common for the background of the developments to be overlooked as many exceptional aerospace engineers, especially women, were incorporated into the task of bestowing advantageous opportunities for space exploration.

The Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, now known as Lockheed Martin, is an aerospace company located in California, committed to establishing aerospace equipment such as launchers, satellites, defense systems and developing other equipment for space exploration. Mary Golda Ross, a Native American engineer at the corporation, was acknowledged for her notable contributions in the aerospace industry.
Born in 1908, in Park Hill Oklahoma, Ross was a Native American mathematician who worked as an engineer at the Lockheed Aircraft Company. Ross was initially summoned to work as an engineer at the corporation, but was eventually advised to pursue her certification in engineering from the University of California in Los Angeles. Some of Ross’ contributions were recognized as interplanetary space travel, orbiting flights, and the development of spacecrafts. Additionally, she made comprehensive theories of the potential facilitation of traveling to Venus or Mars, which are currently being implemented.

Ross’ work has been historically unrecognized, as mostly men were dominating the aerospace industry. Her contributions paved the way for our present future, featuring accommodations in interplanetary travel. Her astonishing achievements weren’t just in the engineering field; she was also a notable financial supporter of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, which conveyed the contributions of the American Indians. Mary Golda Ross will be acknowledged as a Native American engineer, a mathematician, and a sympathetic individual who strives to assist her community.
