Chemistry is the science that deals with the properties, composition, and structure of substances (defined as elements and compounds), the transformations they undergo, and the energy that is released or absorbed during these processes (Rocke & Usselman, 2023). Once, this field carried limits because of its characteristics; however, with the advancements of technology, these limits are now merely hindrances. Out of many, three exceptional technologies will be explored: computational chemistry, nanotechnology, and green chemistry.
Firstly, Nanotechnology. This field involves the study and manipulation of individual atoms and molecules (Lozano, 2022). Because chemistry is the study of the smallest particle with the human eye, it is nearly impossible to even modify it. Still, this does not hinder the human mind from thinking of possible ways to reach such heights. The existence of this is expanding the field into many fields, such as energy and medicine. In cases like delivering medications through cancer cells, nanoparticles in medication reduce the adverse effects of the medication as well as increase its effectiveness. Meanwhile, in energy, batteries and solar cells are becoming more efficient and environmentally friendly with the help of nanomaterials.
Computational chemistry does not go far from such immense contributions. According to the American Chemistry Society (2023), computational chemistry uses high-performance computing to solve problems and create simulations that require massive amounts of data. Computational chemists must understand the underlying principles of a simulation, optimization, or other calculation to set up the conditions and parameters of their study and to ensure that the results are meaningful and properly interpreted. Because of this, the production of new and unique materials is done safely and adeptly. Additionally, the behaviors of atoms can now be explored more thoroughly via this engineering, creating a wonderful learning space for those searching for knowledge through chemistry.
And finally, environmental science. Green Chemistry is the name given to chemical techniques and methodologies that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of products, solvents, reagents, etc. that are hazardous to human health or the environment (N.B. Singh, 2022). This means that with the use of green chemistry, chemists and other field researchers aim to lessen or completely remove dangerous materials that harm the environment. This creates the possibility of developing chemicals that are less harmful to the environment, improving not only natural life but also inducing the growth of chemistry.
It can be concluded that science is truly a subject of constant change, and its branches are no exception. With nanotechnology helping living and non-living in the nanoscale, computational chemistry researching reactions and atoms in the monitor, and green chemistry acting as the shield for natural matters, these developments are no exception to the growth of this field, as they not only provide understanding but also ignite the fire for new ideas.
