In December, Her STEM Space EDH Chapter had their first event. That rainy day they learned about space careers and built moon landers in the county library. The event was created and hosted by chapter head Morgan Taylor with the help of friends and volunteers.

The event was geared towards middle school to high school girls, but was open to all. Many families came with their kids, who were eager to learn and test out their landers. Volunteers came to provide tips on the landers and create a fun environment for the kids. In the end, they all problem-solved together and each created a successful lander through different skills and techniques. The chapter is currently trying to expand and reach more people in the area, and this was a great first step. They hope to continue to gain members and host events for the community in the future!

The activity itself used marshmallows, stock paper, rubber bands, straws, and plastic cups. It invited the participants to use materials to make a moon lander with a soft landing, protecting the two “astronauts” (large marshmallows) inside. After they succeeded, they got to eat their marshmallows as a little snack. The participants were engaged, excited, and prideful when they succeeded. This is the type of community the club strives to create, and hopes to continue to do in the future.
