The Her STEM Space Chapter in El Dorado Hills hosted a hands-on suturing lab on November 14, led by Avanti Ramamoorthy, the secretary of her school’s Women in STEAM Club. Working alongside STEM mentors, this event gave many children the unique opportunity to explore science firsthand, learning the basics of suturing and wound care.

With the help of 8 other students from Oak Ridge High School, the lab was held at the El Dorado Hills Library. The participants learned different suturing techniques, proper usage of tools, and the importance of precision and patience in medical procedures that involve stitches. While the event was aimed at encouraging women in STEM, it was open to all students, creating a collaborative and inclusive learning environment.

During the event, students practiced suturing on a replica of synthetic skin; in this case they used the peel of a banana. The children learned how to slice through skin, and effectively suture it back up to prevent scaring and ensure a safe healing, which allowed them to apply scientific knowledge in a real-world context. The theme of the event was STEMSGiving, and along the way children expressed their thankfulness for STEM
Overall, the suturing lab was a success, sparking curiosity and inspiration among students. The El Dorado Hills chapter hopes to continue offering interactive, skill-building events that empower young women in STEM, while broadening their horizons regarding medicine, science, and more.
