Understanding how our brain works can sometimes feel really complicated, but the best way to learn about it is by experiencing it yourself! On March 6, the Her STEM Space Chapter in El Dorado Hills hosted the workshop “Calm Your Brain” to share the connection between neuroscience and mindfulness to younger students.

This event was organized by Avanti Ramamoorthy, and was led by other students from Oak Ridge High School. After lots of planning, this workshop was created to blend neuroscience lessons with interactive yoga to help show students how their brain and body works together. During the workshop, students learned about how the brain processes stress and emotions, and experienced regulating them as well!

After learning about how the nervous system can react to stress, the participants practiced breathing exercises and fun yoga poses to “Calm Your Brain” and improve their focus. Balancing poses like “Tree Pose” helped show that the brain works to control movement, while breathing exercises like “Box Breathing” helped show that slowing down your breath can help regulate stress in your body.

By combining science with movement, this workshop helped students see that neuroscience is something they can experience everyday through their thoughts, emotions, and physical actions. This event left many students excited about wellness and science, which is a part of Her STEM Space’s mission to make STEM accessible, and fun, for young learners.
